Understanding the MyPlate Framework
A comprehensive visual guide explaining the USDA MyPlate model, including recommended daily servings of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy. Includes practical portion-size comparisons using everyday objects (a baseball equals one cup of vegetables, a deck of cards equals three ounces of lean meat) and culturally adapted meal examples featuring Southern, Latin American, and West African cuisine traditions commonly found in Charlotte households. This guide addresses common misconceptions about carbohydrates, healthy fats, and protein requirements, with specific attention to budget-conscious shopping strategies for families utilizing SNAP benefits or WIC vouchers.
Blood Sugar-Friendly Meal Planning
Developed for participants in our Diabetes Prevention Workshop Series and available to all community members, this resource provides a seven-day sample meal plan designed to maintain stable blood glucose levels throughout the day. Each meal and snack includes estimated glycemic load values, macronutrient breakdowns, and preparation time estimates. The guide covers strategic carbohydrate distribution across meals, the importance of pairing complex carbohydrates with protein and fiber, and practical label-reading techniques for identifying added sugars, refined grains, and hidden sodium in packaged foods. Includes a printable grocery checklist organized by supermarket aisle layout.
Healthy Cooking on a Budget
A collection of 20 nutritious, family-friendly recipes that cost under four dollars per serving using ingredients available at most Charlotte-area grocery stores and farmers markets. Recipes emphasize whole grains, legumes, seasonal produce, and lean protein sources while minimizing processed ingredients, excess sodium, and added sugars. Each recipe includes step-by-step instructions, a nutritional information panel, common substitutions for dietary restrictions (gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian), and estimated preparation and cooking times. Developed in collaboration with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina to align with commonly distributed food bank inventory items.
Exercise & Fitness Resources
Safe, accessible exercise guides for all ages and fitness levels, with special attention to older adults, individuals with chronic conditions, and those new to regular physical activity.
Getting Started with Walking for Health
Walking is the most accessible and evidence-supported form of physical activity for cardiovascular health, weight management, and mental wellness. This guide provides a structured four-week progressive walking program designed for individuals who are currently sedentary or have not exercised regularly in over six months. Week one begins with three ten-minute sessions and gradually builds to five thirty-minute sessions by week four, aligning with the CDC's recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. The guide includes warm-up and cool-down stretching sequences, guidance on proper footwear selection, hydration recommendations, and a printable walking log for tracking distance, duration, and perceived exertion. Also lists free public walking trails, greenways, and indoor mall walking programs available throughout Mecklenburg County.
Chair-Based Strength & Balance Exercises
A series of 12 illustrated seated and standing exercises using a sturdy armless chair as the primary support tool. Exercises target lower-limb strength, hip stability, ankle mobility, and dynamic balance — the key physical capacities associated with fall prevention in older adults. Each exercise includes modifications for varying ability levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced), repetition and set recommendations, breathing cues, and safety precautions. Developed in alignment with the Otago Exercise Programme and reviewed by a board-certified geriatric physical therapist. Recommended companion resource for participants in our Senior Fitness and Falls Prevention program.
Mental Health & Stress Management
Mental health is inseparable from physical health. These resources address the emotional and psychological dimensions of chronic disease prevention and overall well-being.
Stress Management for Chronic Disease Prevention
Chronic psychological stress contributes to elevated cortisol levels, systemic inflammation, disrupted sleep patterns, and unhealthy coping behaviors — all of which increase risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. This resource introduces five evidence-based stress management techniques: progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), diaphragmatic breathing exercises, guided imagery, gratitude journaling, and structured social connection practices. Each technique includes step-by-step instructions, recommended daily practice durations, and citations from the peer-reviewed literature documenting their effectiveness in reducing blood pressure, improving glycemic control, and enhancing subjective well-being. Additional sections address recognizing signs of clinical depression and anxiety, reducing stigma around mental health care, and accessing affordable counseling services in the Charlotte area through community mental health centers and sliding-scale private practitioners.
Local Mental Health Crisis Resources
A comprehensive directory of immediate and ongoing mental health support services available to Mecklenburg County residents. Includes contact information for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988), the NAMI Charlotte helpline, Cardinal Innovations Healthcare crisis services, and the Mecklenburg County Community Support Services walk-in crisis center. Also lists free and low-cost ongoing counseling options, peer support groups, and family support services for caregivers of individuals with chronic health conditions, substance use disorders, or serious mental illness.
